Category 1, 2, and 3 Water Damage — What's the Difference?

Not every water damage call is the same, even when the visible mess looks similar. Restoration professionals classify water into three categories, and that classification drives the safety protocol, the equipment used, and what materials can be saved versus what has to be removed.

Category 1: clean water

Category 1 is clean water from a sanitary source — the classic example is a burst supply line. This is the least hazardous category, and if it's addressed quickly, more materials can typically be dried and saved rather than replaced.

Category 2: gray water

Category 2 is gray water with some contamination — think a washer or dishwasher overflow. It's not sterile, but it isn't sewage either. Category 2 events still call for professional extraction and drying to prevent contamination from spreading or microbial growth from starting.

Category 3: black water

Category 3 is black water — sewage backups and flooding that has contacted waste. This category always requires professional extraction and decontamination. Porous materials that Category 3 water has touched, like carpet padding and drywall, typically can't be saved and need to be removed rather than dried.

Why the category matters more than the visible mess

Two rooms can look equally wet and still require completely different responses. A Category 1 supply-line break in a hallway might dry out with commercial equipment and minimal material loss. A Category 3 event in the same space means safety protocols, decontamination, and likely material replacement — regardless of how much standing water is visible on the surface.

Can water damage always be repaired?

In the large majority of cases, yes — if it's addressed quickly. Extraction plus proper structural drying can save wood framing, subfloor, and many finishes if water hasn't sat long enough to cause rot or microbial growth. The exception is materials saturated for an extended period, or contaminated Category 2/3 porous materials, which often need replacement rather than drying.
